Which is your favourite real life team?
Chicago Cubs
How did you end up following them?
I was born in Chicago to transplanted, southern parents. During the first 8 mos. of life, I lived north of North Avenue, until my parents brought me to West Tennessee, where my family has lived for generations. Unlike my friends at school, who were always St. Louis fans, I took advantage of annual trips back to Chicago in the summers to renew my Cubs fandom. For this I suffered much abuse and many losing seasons until that glorious 10th inning of game 7 in the 2016 World Series. Ah, well, it was fun while it lasted. Now we return to business as usual.
How did you find this league?
I saw the announcment on Fantrax of a vacancy (now filled) and loved the description of the league. I like the realism of the format, the complex but not overly complicated structure of the game, and the focus on the longer-term horizon.
Please give a brief overview of your fantasy baseball experience.
I have played in several annual leagues over the past decade and more, on MLB, Yahoo, etc. That was my introduction to play and I still occasionally sign up for one of these leagues to "practice" drafting and setting lineups, etc.
My favorite league so far was a dynasty/keeper 12-team H2H with salary caps, a free agent auction, and a minor league draft. I took over a team before I really had a clue about the increased commitment and knowledge required for such a league, but they stayed with me and taught me the ropes. If "real life" and work had not gotten out of hand, I would still be playing with that group.
I have played for a year or two in some other dynasty leagues and enjoyed it, but not as much. There have also been a couple of instances where it seemed to me that playing for money got in the way of playing for the fun of the game and playing to learn. Those I bowed out of when the vitriol and accusations of some owners with one another (thankfully, I was never the target) became more than I wanted to stand, but only after the season ended. I have also run a couple of Fantrax leagues and decided pretty quickly that it is too much work. Commissioners have my utmost respect and support, though I will still argue my point when I think the game can be improved in some way.
How many other leagues are you currently a member of, and what format are they (ie H2H, roto, redraft, keeper, auction etc)?
As I noted above, a couple of years ago "real life" intervened to the extent that I bowed out entirely and, other than an occasional dip into an annual league, I haven't played much in the past 2 years. I am not currently a member of any league.
How often will you be available to be contacted by fellow owners in this league?
Usually daily (for brief responses) and once a week (for longer responses requiring more analysis or thought). I travel a few times a year, sometimes for a week or two in the spring, summer, or fall, when it may be hard to respond.
This is a league with 30 teams in it, and as such it can be expected that there will be a rather large number of teams that will not contend every season. Would you be content with building for the future?
Yes, that is my preferred mode of play, planning carefully for the future, more chess than checkers. I have never won a league championship, but I have managed a couple of last place teams that I acquired to the middle of the pack and even into the playoffs. I like that challenge and, though I like to win or to play spoiler, I do not lose interest when I fail to place. I am more interested in ending the year or starting next year in a better position than I entered it.
Do you need to always be in competition in order to remain interested in the league?
No. As long as there are avenues to improve with future drafts, free agency, etc., I'm in.
Is there any other information you think we as a league should know in order to best determine your eligibility?
I would be happy to take on any team that becomes available.
Please post links to any other leagues you participate in.
NA. None at the moment.
