League Rules FAQs
What are protected prospects/players?
You have the rights to any prospect or arbitration eligible (1st - 6th year) player (except those previously traded away) in the system of the MLB team you are affiliated with. These players do not need to be "protected" to remain in your system, however if your real life MLB team trades them and you do not have them protected, you lose their rights without compensation. All players acquired from other organizations must be protected in order to retain their rights. Protecting a prospect with fewer than 150 ABs or 50 IP in the majors costs $0.3 against the salary cap.
See Section VII of the rules for full details.
How do player contracts work?
Any player who has accumulated less than 150 total MLB at bats or 50 total MLB innings pitched in their career by the opening day of the current season is classed as a first year player.
Upon completion of their 150th cumulative MLB at bat or 50th cumulative MLB inning pitched then a player is in their final year of 1st year eligibility, and the next season they will be classed as a 2nd year player. The subsequent year they will be classed as a 3rd year player, and so on until the end of their 6th year when they will become a free agent.
1st year players cost $0.3, 2nd year players cost $0.5 and 3rd year players cost $1.0. 4th-6th year players are assigned a salary based on performance from the previous season. Players with 1st - 6th year contracts can be dropped (unprotected) at any time, with dropped players from other organisations reverting back to their affiliated team. Players with contracts signed through free agency can not be dropped.
See Section III of the rules for full details.
What options are available if you have inherited a player on a long term guaranteed contract?
There is a one time provision for newly arrived GMs to reduce the length of one multi year guaranteed contract to become a single year, or expiring, contract. Please notify one of the commissioners within your first 28 days of arrival and specify which player’s contract length you would like to reduce per rule 2.13.
Which players may be used on Fantrax?
Only players who are currently receiving a salary on your Proboards roster page may be used to accumulate stats on Fantrax.
When is the draft?
We do not have a draft. All players drafted or signed by your affiliated MLB team are automatically your property. We have an auction in the offseason for players with more than 6 years of service time. We do one position per week.
How does Free Agency work?
Free agency is divided into positions, with one position up for bid every week. Teams may bid as many times as they like, but the bidding is over once a bid has been the highest for a period of 24 hours. The minimum contract for all free agents is 2 years except for a few players who finish near the top of the rankings for their position who will require longer contracts as posted. Teams may give up to two contracts per year that include option years. However, any team that declines an option on a contract is not eligible to claim the "hometown discount". See Section V of the rules for full details.
Why is it prohibited to edit protect/unprotect threads and free agency threads?
Roster transaction threads and free agency threads rely on the time stamp for verification of ownership rights. If you discover an error, please add a follow up post to explain since editing in these two types of threads is strictly prohibited.
What is the "Hometown Discount?"
When a player enters free agency, the team that lost that player at the end of the previous season is entitled to a 20% discount on the players free agent contract. If the player was on BOTH the fantasy roster and that teams affiliated MLB roster then the discount is 30%.
See Section V of the rules for full details.
When can I start trading?
New owners are required to wait until one week after they have posted a trading block before they can complete a trade. This is to give new owners a chance to get a feel for how players are valued in our league and to prevent other owners from taking advantage of inexperience.
Before a new owner can officially agree to a trade they must have posted an accurate roster for their team, and have protected at least 1 player since taking over their roster. (This shows the league that you understand the rules and processes involved in being a GM).
It is strongly advised that during this week new owners do not agree to any deals, but instead use this time to field offers, engage in trade discussion and aclimatise to the nuances of the league.
I don't understand something. What should I do?
The rules have been written with the hope of being self-sufficient and straight-forward. However, if you still have a question then you can either post on General board, or message the Commissioner or one of the TC who will be more than willing to help. No question is too big or too small.
Anything else?
Yes... have fun!
