Please forgive any unappealing formatting, I’m making this post from a mobile device.
What is your name, age and general location?
Daniel (or Dan), 31, East Tennessee
What is your email address?
d-nielsen@live.com
Which is your favourite real life team? How did you end up following them?
For better or for worse, my favorite team is the Minnesota Twins. I was born and raised in Minnesota and have a lot of fond memories of watching games with my paternal grandparents with the tv muted and radio on because they liked the radio call better. Despite that, Dick Bremer’s voice (long time PxP for Twins tv broadcast) is synonymous with baseball for me. Aside from the Twins, I thoroughly enjoy young teams and underdogs, I love to see a young player build their confidence and surprise themselves as much as they surprise those watching.
How did you find this league?
I saw it mentioned in the Effectively Wild discord server (Discordantly Wild).
Please give a brief overview of your fantasy baseball experience. How many other leagues are you currently a member of, and what format are they (ie H2H, roto, redraft, keeper, auction etc)?
I’ve played on and off (more consistently as of late) in ESPN leagues for more than a decade, usually joining 2-3 public leagues with strangers. Those have always been H2H.
I am currently committed to a 10-team for 2023 and beyond (my first dynasty league) and, if selected for this league, I would not seek a third. That league is a paid league and will feature both H2H and roto scoring, with the winnings being split between the top 3 in both categories and each winner only receiving one prize (i.e. if the same manager wins 1st in roto and 2nd in H2H, they’ll receive the roto winnings and the H2H winnings and all those below that place will move one place down).
How often will you be available to be contacted by fellow owners in this league?
At a minimum, once a week; more likely almost nightly. As of right now I work from home 2-3 days a week. Any extended absences(work trips, busier than normal work weeks, vacations, etc.), save for family emergencies, will likely come with more than a week’s notice.
This is a league with 30 teams in it, and as such it can be expected that there will be a rather large number of teams that will not contend every season. Would you be content with building for the future? Do you need to always be in competition in order to remain interested in the league?
Call me crazy, but the prospect of conducting a rebuild is exciting to me. While I’m not a fan of MLB teams using that (tanking) as a strategy, trying to find that diamond in the rough and being strategic with the kind of salary space many people would be envious of is, and then turning that into a dynasty is what would keep me engaged. Additionally, I’ve spent more and more time as of late paying attention to prospects and trying to find that winning “lottery ticket” will always keep me coming back.
Is there any other information you think we as a league should know in order to best determine your eligibility?
Analytics has become more and more of a hobby (read: obsession) for me. The job I got after grad school doesn’t involve any advanced data analysis so to keep my skills sharp in R (common data science language) I spend time every week sifting through baseball data, creating visuals, comparing stats, etc.
Please post links to any other leagues you participate in.
The above mentioned dynasty league is still waiting on 2 more owners before drafting so there is no web presence as of this posting. If it is so desired by the Commissioner or any other managers I will gladly reach out to that Commissioner and ask his permission to share the league constitution he has drafted.
Thank you for your consideration!
