7.8 Protects and Unprotects During Roster Maintenance Period7.1 Players Eligible to be Protected
An unprotected arbitration eligible (1st - 6th year) player may be protected by the team who holds the rights to that player. See Section III for guidance on calculating arbitration years and salaries.
Rights to a player in this league are determined by which real life team owns their rights. For example: if Joe Blow is a player within the Toronto Blue Jays organisation (at any level) and is unprotected in this league, the Blue Jays (and only the Blue Jays) have rights to protect (or trade) him.
Players who have been drafted but not yet signed may not be protected (or traded).
In case of a player protect closely co-inciding with a real life transaction, the agreed reference point for determining the timing of a real life move will be:
1. The official transaction time (if known).
2. The first report of said move, if it precedes the official transaction time, by any credible media source.
7.2 Format for Protecting Players
To protect a player you must list the name and contract details (year of arbitration and salary) of the player(s) that you wish to protect in the 'Roster Transactions' thread, and specify that you are protecting them.
7.3 Players Eligible to be Unprotected
A protected arbitration eligible (1st - 6th year) player may be unprotected by the team currently rostering that player.
Players who have been awarded guaranteed contracts through free agency cannot be unprotected.
7.4 Unprotecting 1st - 6th Players Who Are Not The Property of Your Real Life Team
If you unprotect a 1st - 6th year player who is not the property of your real life team then the rights to that player revert to the team in this league that is affiliated to the player's new real life team.
New team owners may not unprotect a player who is not the property of their real life team for one week after assuming ownership of their team. This 'cooling off' period is intended to allow new owners the opportunity to field offers for the players they may wish to unprotect. It also allows new owners the opportunity to get a better feel for the values of the players they own, and this may help them to decide on their initial team strategy.
7.5 Unprotecting 1st - 6th Players Who Are The Property of Your Real Life Teams
If you unprotect a 1st - 6th year player who is the property of your real life team then you retain all rights to the player. They can be protected or unprotected at any time without penalty. However, if a player is traded away from your real life team whilst unprotected then you no longer have any rights to that player.
7.6 Format for Unprotecting Players
To unprotect a player you must list the name and contract details (year of arbitration and salary) of the player(s) that you wish to unprotect in the 'Roster Moves' thread, and specify that you are unprotecting them.
You may optionally state which team their rights revert to if applicable.
7.7 Availability of Players with Non-Guaranteed Contracts Missing from a Roster
A player with a non-guaranteed contract who is 'missing' from the Proboards roster to which he should belong may be protected by the team who would hold the rights to that player as if he were unprotected if all of the following conditions are met:
1. One month has passed since the first roster of any sequence where a player is continuously missing was originally posted
2. Three months have passed since the transaction which should have added the player to the roster
3. Three months have passed since the player last accumulated stats on the scoring website (or the player has never accumulated a stat on the scoring website)
4. Confirmation has been received from a Commissioner that the first three conditions have been met.
Following confirmation from the the Commissioner that condition 4 has been met, the Commissioner will post publicly to confirm the loss of player rights from the team where they are missing.
7.8 Protects and Unprotects During Roster Maintenance Period
Protects and Unprotects can be made at any time during the season, with the exception of the Roster Maintenance Period (see rule 2.18).
