Preamble: mlbbaseballleague.proboards.com/post/53576/threadPossible area for improvement: Replacing the 'Batting Average' scoring category. Why this could be considered an area for improvement: Batting Average, whilst a traditional measure of success in the batter's box and a traditional fantasy scoring category, is a statistic which could be argued to be a poor representation of whether a plate appearance has been successful or not. It places no value on walks or hit by pitches. Possible solution: Replace Batting Average with On Base Percentage. Pros of solution: - It could be argued that OBP is a better measure of a batter's success and value than BA. - Batters who get on base a lot via walks and HBPs (which adds value in real life in a way which is not described in BA) would be rewarded for it in our scoring, strengthening the relationship between 'real life' value and 'Mibble' value. Cons of solution: - Parting with tradition. - Whilst adopting OBP would be far from the most complex concept in this league, it does not match the at-a-glance simplicity of BA. - Questionable benefit, given that most (if not all) scoring categories are not necessarily accurate indicators of success/quality/performance. Alternative solution(s): The only other similar category offered by Fantrax which would not also be impacted by power (eg TB, OPS or RC (runs created)) is hits. Repositioning the batting average to another category which is influenced by power is not an objective of this area for possible improvement. Hits as a category would not deliver the improvement that is being considered. Notice period for adoption if solution voted in: Long (2+ years)

While I favor OBP (as does modern baseball), if we use W (a traditional stat), I like using BA. It simply fits better with our overall makeup.
