$700 million?!?!?
My son is 2 years old. If I start teaching him to hit and pitch now do you think it’s not too late?

According to the latest info I could find, a major portion of the contract is deferred, to allow the Dodgers to remain competitive and to ease their luxury tax burden. But, it’s still $700M!! Almost twice the previous top contract.

Imagine if he were fully healthy going into next year. He may have passed $1 billion.
Also, it sounds like a lot of it will be deferred. We may have a new Bobby Bonilla standard as well.

Bonilla is exactly who I thought of when I heard about the deferred aspect. I mean Bonilla gets paid until 2035! It’ll be interesting to see the details and how the deferral is being paid out.

The Dodgers must have done some number crunching on how much Japan / Asia is going to spend on Ohtani stuff, plus they will probably be able to keep selling stuff well past the end of his career. I don't even want to think about how much they will be paying in luxury tax while they pay ONE GUY more than EIGHT teams' ENTIRE PAYROLL for 2024. He's going to be making nearly double the A's payroll.

I wonder if they ever thought of just giving him an ownership stake in the team (or if that’s allowed). By deferring $700 million they’ll probably be making payments to his kids.

This was not the Christmas present I was looking for. I guess on the plus side the Dodgers will probably win the division if they can find the pitching. But I guess they will choke again in the playoffs or WS. 🤣

I doubt it would be a full Bonilla, but paying him close to the current record a year (say $50M to top Verlander's $43M) and spreading the rest over 10-20 years isn't that unreasonable for a team that apparently has no real budget.

Looks like he’s only getting about $2 million per year for the life of the contract and they’re deferring $680 million until 2034.
So when are we adding fully deferred contracts?

my next bid will be $28.0 2028 but pay it out as $1 from now through 2028 so I can continue to build a competitive team around him and defer the rest...that'll fly right?

Unreal precedent being set. Trading him would involve insane accounting. He deserves it though…only dude worth it.

Arguably that’s the problem. He’s brings so much value to the team and they’re getting him essentially for free so they can sign other big contracts and not pay luxury tax penalties. That’s a huge competitive advantage. It’s wild the CBA put no limits on deferred money.
