Week 18 notes and records
Division leaders:
- Orioles (#1 AL, #3 overall) - AL #1 seed
- Royals (#3 AL, #7 overall) - AL #3 seed
- Rangers (#2 AL, #4 overall) - AL #2 seed
- Braves (#3 NL, #5 overall) - NL #3 seed
- Brewers (#2 NL, #2 overall) - NL #2 seed
- Rockies (#1 NL, #1 overall) - NL #1 seed
Wild Card leaders:
- Rays (#4 AL, #8 overall) - AL #4 seed
- Astros (#5 AL, #9 overall) - AL #5 seed
- Guardians (#6 AL, #10 overall) - AL #6 seed
- Marlins (#4 NL, #6 overall) - NL #4 seed
- Giants (#5 NL, #11 overall) - NL #5 seed
- Cardinals (#6 NL, #12 overall) - NL #6 seed
Wildcard matchups:
#5 HOU at #4 TB - winner plays at BAL
#6 CLE at #3 KC - winner plays at TEX
#5 SF at #4 MIA - winner plays at COL
#6 STL at #3 ATL - winner plays at MIL
Notes:
- No teams achieved a 10-0-0 win this week.
- Having led the NLE since week 2, the Marlins were pipped to the division title on the last week by the Braves who defeated them 6-4-0. With equal Win%s, the Braves win by virtue of having a solitary extra category win over the course of the season - 114 to 113.
- The Cardinals claimed the final NL wildcard position, with the Reds unable to match their 8-0-2 final week scoreline. It is the Cardinals first appearance in the post-season since 2017.
- The Brewers were unable to hold on to their #1 overall position, with Rockies crushing Giants 9-1-0 and claiming the regular season's best record by just half a game. This was a ding-dong battle all season.
- Taking advantage of a very poor Sunday showing from the Rays, the Orioles managed to improve by a couple of categories on the last day and retained their #1 seed in the AL by just half a game.
- Of this season's 12 playoff teams, 9 were also in the playoffs last season. Congrats to the Rockies, Astros and Giants for breaking in.
- In a repeat of their week 18 matchup, the Guardians and the Royals meet again immediately in Wildcard week. In week 18, KC narrowly won 5-4-1.
- Not a record, but a hat-tip to the White Sox for managing their pitching ratios and ending with a 1.42 ERA and tiny 0.711 WHIP across their 12.2 innings this week.
- The Brewers crushed the seasonal SB record, with 23 more SB than the previous best of 117 - nearly a 20% increase on the old record.
- All teams met the AB and IP minimums for scoring. I think every team achieved every minimum every week.
