Season summary:
This was my worst W/L record in our 7 year history. The season could be summarized in 3 parts.
Early season: The strength of my team was its low cost pitching staff. While they performed well as a whole, they couldn’t overcome a disastrously inept offense.
Mid-season: I abandoned my focus on low cost pitching in favor of reacquiring hometown prospects and players. This operational change came at a heavy cost in the W/L standings.
Late season: A few current players on FA salary contracts were acquired. Acknowledging that it wasn’t an efficient choice, it made the game fun and has the small benefit of simplifying my offseason plans.
Surprises:
- C Garrett Stubbs (.270, 4 HR, 2 SB, 74 ABs) As a back-up catcher, Stubbs made good use of his very limited time. The line is modest, but for a catcher it’s enough to earn a pleasant smile.
- SP Cristian Javier (50 IP, 2.49 ERA, 0.868 WHIP, 69 strikeouts) No surprise that he was good, but Javier took a real step forward this year. He started throwing more first pitch strikes and everything seemed to click.
- RP Jonathan Hernandez (2 saves) Could he really be the Rangers’ closer this quickly after recovering from TJ surgery? His only prior MLB experience was in front of cardboard cutouts.
Disappointments:
- RF Michael Conforto (0 ABs) Conforto is on this list two years in a row. Accepting the qualifying offer really wouldn’t have been so bad.
- 1B,2B,LF Orlando Arcia (.203, 5 HR) To me, Arcia looked like the gem of free agency. In reality he was ok at best. Not completely terrible, but not helpful either.
- SP,RP Hunter Brown (0 IP) Hunter Brown has been electric in Sugar Land, but he’s thoroughly blocked. Maybe next year?
Awards:
Team Batting MVP: Corey Seager. Healthy, consistent, and very well paid.
Honorable mention: Wilmer Flores. (.246, 8 HR)
Team pitching MVP: Cristian Javier
Honorable mention: Luis Garcia.
Minor league player of the year (batting or pitching): SS Enmanuel Valdez (25 HR, 1.000+ OPS)
Runner up: CF Justin Dirden (20 HR, 1.000+ OPS) I’d venture a guess that he gets a chance in Houston within the next week or two.
Final thoughts:
My team currently occupies the often-undesirable middle ground of a dynasty league. It’s neither a championship quality team, nor stocked with top 100 prospects. For my eclectic tastes though, it’s perfect. It brings me joy to track this group of players. (Well, maybe with the exception of JBJ… or Brett Phillips… or Jose Siri…)
There has never been a better time to play here in Mibble. As a group, the GMs seem to get sharper every year. The 2022 TC was phenomenal. Often trades were processed before I even had the chance to dig in. Credit to Stephen especially for keeping the gears turning smoothly and reminding us all to update our rosters following a trade.
Thanks to everyone for the fun year.
