By posting, the Padres accept. I decided to welcome myself back into the league with a nice 13 player deal, easy peasy.
Well, I was fortunate to not only get back into the league after a year hiatus, but also inherit the same team I built over the prior 4 years, albeit with a few changes/holes that weren't addressed over this offseason. This team's window to compete is now, as the star players are all under contract for another 2-3 years, so I decided to fill as many holes as possible with some of the prospect surplus the prior owner acquired/retained.
This trade gives me a number of arms to build my SP/ RP depth, if I am going to be serious about making a run at any of the top dogs. Cishek/ Stammen/ Fry are not close to sexy bullpen pieces, but depth is paramount to win in this league. Hill and Teheran will hopefully give me solid, yet unspectacular ratios to build up my pitching stats. Alberto is pricy for being a potential role player, but KC is finding ways to get him on the field and he is hitting. Plus my hitting depth is paper thin. Getting Clevinger, even though injured, puts me in the catbird seat to try and retain him with a 30% discount next offseason in what may be the twilight of my competitive window.
As for what I'm giving up, a lot of potential. Miller and Hendrick appear to have come over in the Gore trade by the prior owner, so while they are currently heralded, I have no ties to them (and wish I still had Gore). I think Miller ends up a better everyday player than fantasy player. Hendrick seems like he could be an everyday OF in time, but I'm not waiting around to see if he pans out. Wilcox looks like a potential mid rotation starter eventually with the Rays and Cabrera is a true lottery ticket IMO. The guy I will miss the most out of this bunch is Gil. I acquired him before my hiatus in 2020 and think he can be the next fireball closer in the majors. I will miss him and may try to reacquire him down the road, if possible.
Thanks Andy for reaching out with ideas and for working through this deal. I enjoyed our spitballing and overall dialogue. You already have the Orioles facing the right direction after years of complacency from the prior ownership. I look forward to seeing a number of these pieces you are stockpiling pan out.
PS- my apologies to the committee for the review you will need to undertake and for anything I may have missed in protocol in posting this trade. I am a bit rusty.
