1. Who can I protect?
You can protect any 1st-6th player who is in your team’s real life organisation who is not owned elsewhere in the league. Unowned players outside of your organisation cannot be protected by you.
When protecting a player, it is advisable to first use the search functionality to check whether they are already owned by another team. This is particularly recommended when trying to protect a player who has recently been traded to your real life organisation (as they might already be protected by a previous team) or when you have recently taken over as a GM of a team (as a previous owner might have already traded away that player).
2. Who can I unprotect?
You can unprotect any 1st-6th player on your roster. Players with guaranteed contracts (signed in free agency and denoted by a year of expiry) cannot be unprotected.
Players you unprotect who are in your team’s real life organisation may be protected again by you in the future assuming that they are still under your real life organisations control (ie they have not been traded away or released in real life). Players you unprotect who are outside of the team’s real life organisation are lost.
If you are a new GM, you may not unprotect any player that is not in your real life organisation for the first week of your ownership. This restriction is designed to stop new owners from harming their roster by unwittingly losing assets with value.
The MBL is one of the deepest fantasy/dynasty formats possible. Players who have no value in other leagues will have value here, and this week-long embargo is intended to give new owners the opportunity to learn that the deepest of deep prospect, the least-effective of relief pitcher or the lightest-hitting of bench bats will more than likely carry trade value in our league that should not be dismissed.
It is strongly recommended that any 1st-6th player you are considering unprotecting who is not in your real life organisation is placed on your trade block for at least several days to give you the opportunity to receive something of value in return for them, rather than giving away their rights for nothing.
3. What information should I post when I protect a player?
When you protect a player, the minimum information necessary is their position, name, year and salary. The player’s real life organisation can be assumed, as they must be part of your organisation to be eligible to be protected by you.
4. What information should I post when I unprotect a player?
When you unprotect a player, the minimum information necessary is their position, name, year and salary. It is considered courteous to list the player’s real life organisation so that other GMs can see when you unprotect a player that may now be their property.
