2018 Astros’ team report:
2018 results:
90 wins, 82 losses, 8 ties (5 games worse than 2017)
3rd in AL West
Missed playoffs
Category leaders (In terms of stats contributed to my results throughout the year. Not necessarily on my roster at the end of the year, nor the players' end of year stat totals.):
BA: Johan Camargo .368
HR: Ian Desmond 19
RBI: Ian Desmond 58
R: Ian Desmond 56
SB: Ian Desmond 11
Team Batting MVP: Ian Desmond. Low batting average, but excellent in the other 4 categories.
Honorable mention: Andrelton Simmons. .315, 6 HR, 5 SB
Strikeouts: Seth Lugo 66 (yes, that’s all it took to lead my team)
ERA: David Hernandez 2.03, 31 IP
WHIP: Bud Norris 1.01, 28 IP
W: Scott Oberg 6
SVHD: Bud Norris 15
Team pitching MVP: Seth Lugo. In a season of transition, led my team in innings pitched with 63. Had a 2.71 ERA, 1.11 WHIP.
Honorable mention: Bud Norris. Took over as the Cardinals closer and ran with it.
Minor league player of the year (batting): LF Yordan Alvarez. Close to a .300 average with good power and patience. Has managed to play in the outfield all season.
Runner up: CF Myles Straw. 57 steals as of this report. Leads all baseball in that category.
Minor league player of the year (pitching): RHP Josh James. An unremarkable minor league career got turned around by fixing sleep apnea. The fringe five favorite has a 13+ k/9.
Runner up: RHP Rogelio Armenteros. Slow start to the season, but has slowly worked it back to a respectable mid 3’s ERA and 10 k/9. He’s a lock to be on the 2019 40-man roster.
Surprises:
- CF Jake Marisnick. One of the absolute worst offensive players in MLB; posted a .309 average with 5 HR after joining my team.
- LF Tony Kemp. No surprise that he performed well, but making a bid to supplant Springer as the Astros leadoff hitter was unexpected. Hugs for homers is also just plain fun.
Disappointments:
- RF Dexter Fowler. Couldn’t even get close to the Mendoza line all year. He’s got to be better than this.
- 1B Miguel Cabrera. My team would’ve looked very different if not for his early season injury. Then again, there were red flags which I chose to ignore.
- SP Burch Smith and RP Liam Hendriks. There will always be pitchers who underperform.
