San Diego Padres trade: RP George Kontos (Pirates) $1.5 6th RP Sean Doolittle (Nats) $4.9 6th to KC Royals for: RP Justin Wilson (Cubs) $2.9 6th RP Tyler Thornburg (Red Sox) $1.0 6th RHP Chad Hockin (Cubs) $0.3 1st- www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=hockin000chaC Chase Vallot (Royals) $0.3 1st- www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=vallot000chaCap change: Padres +$1.9 Royals -$1.9 The Padres accept, I think Wilson can rebound and Thornburg can come back to a big role with the Bo Sox. Vallot and Hockin add some intrigue and something to my non existent farm system and I also gain a little bit of cap room as well. I think I lose the best player in this deal, but I am happy with the overall return. Thanks Chris

The Royals accept.
Doolittle provides a bit of additional insurance for the back of the bullpen in case Herrera is not re-signed. He will continue to close out games for a top tier NL contender (and I’m sure Davey Martinez will know how to properly utilize him). Kontos is a flier for me, who peformed decently upon joining the Pirates.
I hate to sell low on Justin Wilson - as a Cubs fan, I do think his second half is a mirage and 2018 will be more closely aligned to his 2017 first half. Thornburg was a stud for me in 2016; however, I fear that he may have slipped down Boston’s bullpen depth chart after missing 2017. Additionally, between the two Red Sox pen arms, I preferred Smith over Thornburg.
Regarding the prospects, Vallot has struggled thus far, but he has the tools to be a fantasy contributor down the line. Hockin is an intriguing arm, who could be solid down the line out of the pen.
Thanks for the deal, Bill!
