Starting with the 2018 off-season, there will be two notable changes to the scheduling of free agency.
1. The sequence of position player weeks.
In our league's first season, we mostly copied the formula from Rotobaseballl League, with some sorting between SPs and RPs. (C,SP,1B,RP,LF,SP,2B,RP,CF,SP,3B,P,RF,P,SS)
For season two (currently underway) it was decided that we would combine SPs and RPs (same as Rotobaseballl) in order to more evenly disperse the pitching talent and interest. We also decided to start a rotation of position player sequencing so that catchers wouldn't eternally be the first position listed etc.
Despite the rotating plan only being in effect for one year, we'll be replacing the formula starting next off-season. All of the position player weeks will be sequenced according to the top producer in that grouping (according to the overall ESPN player rater). Pitchers would continue to occupy the even rounds from 2-14 (also distributed according to player rater position).
To explain: the primary position of the top ranked non-pitcher FA will be scheduled for week one. The next highest rated FA (neither a pitcher or week 1's position) will be placed in week 3 etc. If it had been implemented this year, weeks 1, 3, 5 and 7 would have been 2B, 1B, 3B, RF because of the player rater finishes of Altuve, Goldschmidt, Núñez, and Trumbo.
The new method serves primarily as a better way of randomizing the sequence. It also has the potential to ensure that many of the highest priced free agents are up for auction earlier in the off-season, thus allowing teams more certainty about how to allocate the rest of their FA budget.
By necessity, the schedule for the sequence of position player weeks will be announced after the MLB regular season is complete and player rater numbers are final. (Odds seem good that CF will be week 1 in 2018.)
2. There will be a universal option deadline.
Currently, teams are allowed to announce their decisions to accept or decline team option years at any point up until that player's FA grouping is opened. Starting next offseason, there will be a deadline prior to the beginning of free agency for teams to make that decision.
Hopefully this contributes a little more to a level playing field and allows all teams to plan ahead with the knowledge of which players are available.
