I accept. This was not an easy trade for me. First off, there was huge oversight by not realizing Betts is not CF eligible this year because of my Fantrax ignorance. And to add insult to injury, the FA bidding on CF was already over. Secondly, giving up Zagunis, who is said to be the best overall hitting prospect in the Cubs farm system, really took a few days to think about. In the end, the CF need was not going away and opportunities to get a player as good as Jones to fill that spot were few and far between. Great working with Bryan on the deal, thanks and good luck!

Isn't Melky Cabrera a free agent?

I am picking up his option. Does that need to be posted in his FA entry? I can do that now.

Yes, the option needs to be picked up first.

I intended on picking up his option but the official decision doesn't need to be made until LF are bid on. Wouldn't that choice be transferred to the Nats to pick it up or not? Sorry I'm not sure of the rule on this.

Thank you for pointing this out Travis.
Yes, the option must be picked up before a player can be traded. Otherwise, he is considered a free agent, ineligible for trade. Cubs, just post your decision in his FA thread, and it should be good.

I assumed if you trade a player on an option, it's inferred that it's picked up... However, reading thru the rules I don't believe it's explicitly stated, and it's probably reasonable to assume that when you trade a player on an option, the option to pick it up or not is also transferred to the new team.
What is the rationale for waiting until a particular free agent group is up for bidding to be able to declare why I whether an option is picked up or not? Seems like there's definitely an advantage to having a player in the latter groups. Why not just have all pending options need to be decided in the interim between the end of the season and the start of free agency? That way it's the same for everyone and everyone knows what free agents will be available, etc?

That is a good valid point. I guess one advantage of waiting would be if you end up spending more than you planned in the auction so far and decided to make more budget room? But that isn't fair to the managers that have to make the decision on the players in the first round of bidding.
In my other league I'm in we allow players to be traded before a decision is to be made. If there hasn't been a decision the new team gets to decide. If the original team already accepted the contract or option, the new team does not have a choice.

My understanding is that you can make the decision to pick up an option as early as you want once the new season begins, but simply the latest you can do it is the day before that free agency period starts

Regarding Mets' question, yes, Stephen and I had already discussed using a single option deadline date beginning next year. So as to avoid confusion with the current deadline rules, those announcements should be expected after Free Agency. For now, the deadline for picking up a team option is the week that the player becomes available.
It was correct to view Melky Cabrera as a free agent until Cubs announced otherwise. Thanks for your patience.
