2016 Astros' Team Report:
2016 results:
124 wins, 46 losses, 10 ties;
1st in AL West, best regular season win% in MBL for the year
Lost World Series to Nationals
Category leaders (In terms of stats contributed to my results throughout the year. Not necessarily on my roster at the end of the year, nor the players' end of year stat totals.):
BA: Jose Altuve .360
HR: Joey Votto 19
RBI: Carlos Correa 73
R: Jose Altuve 82
SB: Jose Altuve 26
Team Batting MVP: Jose Altuve
K: Noah Syndergaard 156
ERA: Noah Syndergaard 2.59 (notables: Stephen Strasburg 2.80, Chris Devenski 2.14, Vince Velasquez 0.00)
WHIP: Stephen Strasburg 1.082 (notables: Noah Syndergaard 1.169, Chris Devenski 0.925, Vince Velasquez 0.600)
W: Noah Syndergaard 9
SVHD: Joe Blanton 14
Team pitching MVP: Noah Syndergaard
Minor league player of the year (batting): SS Danny Worth (Astros) - 30 yr old journeyman infielder has put together a very nice statistical season in Fresno. Coming off a year in which he batted .314 with an .863 OPS, he has batted .348 with a .996 OPS. He hasn't found much opportunity or success in the majors, although the Astros' win/loss record was 24/9 during his brief stint with the team.
Runner up: LF Michael Conforto (Mets) - Only 100+ plate appearances in the minors, and the caveat of Las Vegas' environment, but batting .427 with a 1.226 OPS.
Minor league player of the year (pitching): Jharel Cotton (Athletics) - with 11 k/9, and a reasonable 1.09 WHIP, Cotton has put together a nice season. After the A's acquired him, he came within one out of throwing a perfect game on August 9th. Although numerous scouts feel that he is destined for the bullpen, I'm hopeful that he should at least have an opportunity in a major league rotation after throwing 120 innings for the second time in his minor league career.
Runner up: SP Rogelio Armenteros (Astros) - 116 innings pitched, 130 strikeouts. Most importantly, he survived Lancaster.
Surprises:
SP,RP Chris Devenski (Astros) - 2.29 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, Devenski has been stellar as a long man out of the bullpen. Wins have been hard to come by, but I couldn't have asked for more from him.
C,LF Evan Gattis (Astros) - 19 HR is no surprise. Gaining catcher eligibility was no certainty when he was acquired, but provided a needed boost to my lineup.
SP Jon Gray (Rockies) - Rocky outings at the beginning, and now toward the end of the season have marred his numbers. However, for the bulk of the year, Gray was reliable both in and out of Colorado.
Disappointments:
LF,RF Preston Tucker (Astros) - I seriously expected to see a .270, 25 HR season from Tucker coming into the year. After an early slump and severely reduced playing time, he's never found his rhythm. Currently batting .164 with 4 HR.
CF Michael Brantley (Indians) - Never made an appearance for my team.
1B Tyler White (Astros) - Expected a strong batting average at the least. Instead, he's batting .176 since the end of the first week.
