To be fair, Ohtani was a special case. I think we could eyeball cases like that and still generally follow the ‘if posted by Japan/SK then FA’ guidelines. Everyone knew Ohtani would be a special case.

I think I'm just more interested in drawing a line between guys who aren't old enough to get a learners permit and guys who've played professionally for years.

That was the intention behind suggesting the posting system. There is no way to fairly equate the talent of overseas players because of the crazy MLB rules when it comes to salary. Under 25 they are subject to same pay scale as a 16 year old kid from Dominica. So depending on birthdate a players contract salary could be so different. Just saying anyone who is posted by the Japan/Korea leagues is a professional player and should be subjected to our FA.

I am in agreement with that. The only fly in that ointment is (are) Cubans who defect, though their pro league isn't on the same level as Japan / Korea.
